7 Foods to Avoid At The Grocery Store To Help Slow Down Aging
As a health coach, I’ve seen how certain foods can make people feel like crap after eating them.
And it’s not just a matter of willpower — the science backs it up.
The Advanced Glycation End-products (AGE) study found that some foods high in AGEs can cause inflammation in the body, leading to faster aging.
That’s why I’ve learned to avoid certain foods altogether, and instead choose options that are lower in AGEs and more nourishing for my body.
Here are some of the foods I avoid when grocery shopping:
Sugary drinks: e.g. cola, fanta, and ice tea, which are high in sugar. Try water, unsweetened tea, fresh vegetable juice instead.
Processed meats: e.g. sausages which are high in AGEs and contribute to inflammation. Choose lean protein sources like fish and poultry.
Snack packs: e.g. gummy bears, candies and crackers, which are high in sugar and refined carbs. Instead, go for fresh fruit, veggies, or homemade snacks made with whole grains.
Gluten-free products: Unlike their marketing, these often have additives and preservatives. Stick to whole foods that are naturally free from gluten like quinoa, amaranth and basmati rice.
Pre-made meals: Often low in quality and high in sodium, sugar, and artificial flavors. Consider meal planning and prioritize home-cooking using fresh ingredients.
Butter & margarine: High in unhealthy fats. Use healthier fats like olive oil or avocado oil.
Condiments & dressings: High amounts of sugar and preservatives. As someone who grew up with a Mediterranean diet, the best option for me is olive oil, vinegar, lemon and fresh herbs.
By making smarter food choices, you can feel better, and even slow down the aging process. What foods do you steer clear of at the grocery store?
